Dizziness/Vertigo is a sensation of spinning, dizziness, or feeling like you are losing your balance.
Causes
Vertigo is most often caused by problems in the inner ear.
- Ear infections, which are most common in young adults and infants.
- Tinnitus, which is a roaring in the ears caused by loud noises or medicine.
- Another cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV. BPPV develops when calcium particles form in the narrow canals in the inner ear. This interferes with your body’s ability to maintain balance.
- Meniere’s disease, which is created by fluid issues in the inner ear. People with Ménière’s disease can also experience ringing in the ears and hearing loss.
- Eustachian tube dysfunction.
- Labyrinthitis is an inner ear problem that often develops as part of a viral infection. The infection leads to swelling in the inner ear, which affects the nerves responsible for maintaining balance.
There are other, less common, causes of vertigo such as brain tumors, strokes, head or neck injuries, or migraine headaches. There are also medications that can cause vertigo as a side effect.
